The Black Teacher is a series of free lectures aimed at discovering the stories of enslaved persons and the legacy of racism in southwestern Pennsylvania. Devised by G.E. Washington, The Black Teacher organizes community through mining these untold stories.
The Black Teacher is a data gathering effort. During one lecture, participants generated more than 700 questions and answers about enslavement and its consequences.
The participatory lecture includes a survey, crafted in collaboration with The Habitorium. Days later, The Black Teacher returns with results and more questions.
Participants work with educational partners to develop interactive curriculum demonstrations and exhibits.
